(Dynamos win 4-2 on penalties)

Holders Dynamos sneaked through to the quarter finals of the Mbada Diamonds Cup after a 4-2 win over whipping boys Quelaton at Rufaro Stadium in Harare. The first round tie had ended in a 1-1 stalemate during regulation time.

The build up to the match was dominated by news that golden boy Denver Mukamba is bravely battling asthma. With some fans unveiling a banner offering their prayers for him, it was only fitting he scored DeMbare’s only goal.
In the penalty shootout Dynamos striker Roderick Mutuma struck the winning penalty while Mukamba missed the fourth penalty when he shot weakly at Quelaton ‘keeper Tapiwa Marime.
A miss by Quelaton’s (not so) Proud Zireni offered the Glamour Boys a lifeline. Mutuma, who had come in for Martin Vengesayi, in the second period, calmed his nerves, shot to the right to the send a big crowd at Rufaro into delirium.
Dynamos young defender Partson Jaure was named man-of-the-match and got US$500. DeMbare coach Callisto Pasuwa conceded that his team struggled with their game. “They thought they had on already. We had so many chances in the first half but at the end of the day they had to fight for a win.
“They (Quelaton) had one striker and three central midfielders so we were having problems in the middle of the park. Denver and (Tichaona) Mabvura were not tucking in when without the ball and we had two strikers in front who were second to the ball,” said Pasuwa.

Shabanie Mine edged Hwange at Maglas yesterday to set up an intriguing Mbada Diamonds Cup quarter-final showdown with neighbours FC Platinum.
On Saturday, FC Platinum destroyed Harare City 3-0 at Nyamhunga in Kariba. All seemed not well in the Hwange camp with their officials coming to the pre-match meeting at 1pm instead of the scheduled 10.30am.
This irked the sponsors. The asbestos miners got their all-important goal from Pervington Zimunya.
And what a goal it was!
Leading goal-scorer, Nelson Mazivisa, was fouled outside the box by Hwange defender Aaron Katebe and impressive Harare referee Nomore Musundire awarded the hosts a free-kick. Zimunya curled in a beauty that Hwange goalkeeper Timothy Sibanda never saw.
