Cynthia Comes Back Stronger With New Video

By Lance Guma

“The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us,” Voltaire once wrote. This message and its meaning was not lost on UK based Zimbabwean singer Cynthia Mare who lost her mother to cancer last year in July.

Cynthia fought back the grief and directed her creativity towards honouring her mother through her forthcoming album Nziyo Dzaidiwa Naamai (Songs My Mother Loved) set for release later this year. Produced by Joseph Kudakwashe Madziyire the album is a tribute to her late mother Enita Charewa – Chamboko.

“My music and my faith have helped me through tough times tremendously. When I lost mom I took it personally like it was my fault. I was hurt and angry that God didn’t save her but in time I realised that God DID save her from all the pain she had and that we had been given such a long time with her.

“I started to remember all the happy times growing up. That’s when I knew I owed it to her to use my talent to remember her in a positive way. Hence the album, songs my mother loved. A collection of songs she loved to sing. Mwari muri Zuva redu is one such song. I’ll always remember her by that one,” she said.

The album includes a heartfelt rendition of the traditional Shona classic, ‘Hatina Musha’’. She says she and her siblings “used to sing this with my mother. It means we don’t have a real home here on earth. We belong with God in heaven and when our time comes we will go back there, where we belong.

“That’s where we can find real peace, rest relief from our worldly troubles. So when we lose our loved ones we should know they are going to that special place. We must not feel too sad for them although we grieve and miss them.”

The accompanying video, premiered this week via the star’s own Youtube channel.  Shot entirely on location at Harare Botanical Gardens, the moving visual directed by Artwell Mukonyora of Angel Arts Productions, features the ever popular Zim Praise Choir and is available to purchase on iTunes.
