With virtually everyone on the streets talking about Beverly “Bev” Sibanda’s exploits on the floor, night spots in the country reportedly clamouring to have her feature at their venues and most men seemingly captivated by the so-called “Viceroy Girl’’, Priscila Taurai of the once-famed dance group, Girls La Musica, has declared they were not intimidated by the Harare-based dancer.

In an interview with Sunday Leisure last Thursday, Taurai said they were not going to be forced to change their dance routines in an effort to match Bev. She said while they were out to entertain patrons and make money, they had principles they stuck to, which bordered on being respectful of their bodies.
“People know us as Girls La Musica and we will not change our style because of a passing thing like Bev. We respect ourselves and we respect our fans, besides, we have it on record that people are no longer appreciating her style, in short hers was a case of a paper fire.
“We are not moved by her, she does not intimidate us at all. We will instead focus on refining our dances and ensure that we get more shows locally and abroad,” said Taurai. She refuted claims that they were faded giants, saying they still had promoters clamouring to feature them either at various night spots or shows.
“The fact that we dance with the likes of Alick Macheso has made us quite popular. We have a lot of people clamouring to feature us and I can tell you that we are always fully booked, we even turn some people down.
“We have also performed as far as South Africa, Zambia and Botswana and I can tell you more is still lined up. I am sure someone like Bev can’t export her dance skills like we do,” she said.
The 29-year-old dancer said as a group they had rules that had to be strictly adhered to which included not drinking during or after a performances.
“Everyone who knows Girls La Musica will tell you we are a no-nonsense group. people have usually taken dance groups as a fast means of prostituting but we are not that at all, we have our principles and we strictly adhere to these. After dancing we go straight home and none of our group members are allowed to drink during or after performances,” said Taurai.
Bev and her group, the Sexy Angels, recently made headlines with their gyrating dance moves with revellers from the city flocking one of the city’s night spots just to get a glimpse of the group. Some even argued that the group marked an evolution of dance groups with the likes of Girls La Musica slowly fading into the background. Sunday News
