Dendera music fans in Karoi were at the weekend left spellbound when Suluman Chimbetu staged a successful show after having last played in the small town in 2007.

Thousands of fans from most parts of Hurungwe braved the chilly weather to witness Sulu chanting “Hurungwe Kata” alongside his uncle Allan at the council-owned Chikangwe Tavern.

Suluman, whose stock has risen of late as compared to years back when he was still learning to become his own man, managed to keep his fans on the dance floor late into the night, churning out both current and yesteryear hits.

The high morale that gripped fans had partly been triggered by Josphat Somanje, who curtain-raised for Sulu. Somanje treated fans to popular hits like “Haulume” and “Seiko Kuonda” among others.

Franco “Slomo” Dhaka, the former Ochestra Mberikwazvo dancer, also wowed revellers with his dexterous footwork, although he no longer enjoys the same limelight he used to with Alick Macheso’s outfit.

Speaking on the sidelines of the show, Karoi Town secretary, Mr Maxwell Kaitano said council has plans to also bring the dendera maestro to remote areas like Tengwe, were people were itching to witness live music.

According to Sulu’s public relations manager, Joe Nyamungoma, “Mwana weDangwe” will hold several other shows in rural communities, starting with shows at Gokwe Centre and Chitekete during the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays next month.

“Hopefully during this years’ Heroes holiday we will tour some of these areas, the reason being that most of our fans will be celebrating the lives of our heroes in their rural areas.” On Saturday night Sulu finalised his Mashonaland West tour with another gig at Zambezi Valley (ZV) Hotel in Kariba.
