HARARE- Zimbabwe’s unemployment crisis came to the fore when thousands of aspiring radio presenters, disc jockeys and news readers thronged a local sports club in Harare to audition for a newly licensed Zanu PF controlled radio station.
Zimpapers Talk Radio was last year controversially awarded a commercial broadcast licence despite being an extension of the Zanu PF controlled Zimpapers group which publishes newspapers like the Herald, Chronicle and Manica Post.
The new project nicknamed ‘Chipangano Radio’ after the notorious Zanu PF gang of thugs in Mbare, held auditions for presenters at the Alexandra Sports Club in Harare. A long and winding queue of unemployed college, university and school leavers had formed as early as 8am at the sports club.
During the auditions yesterday, one had to pass a preliminary round of mainly testing voice projection, creativity and originality before going to the second round where panellists interviewed them as a way of ensuring that the best quality is drawn from the auditions.
The radio station is expected to hit the airwaves by the first week of next month. Many Zimbabweans have switched off from the nauseating propaganda beamed by ZBC Radio and TV. Many have installed satellite decoders and rely on foreign Radio and TV broadcasts. Nehanda Radio.com
