Seven MDC-T activists were hospitalised with 20 more treated for injuries after violent mobs of Zanu PF youths descended on a rally that was scheduled to be addressed by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in Chitungwiza on Sunday.
The violent Zanu PF youths singing songs in support of their party and 87 year old dictator Robert Mugabe threw rocks at MDC-T supporters inside the stadium where the rally was to be held. Up to five party vehicles were also damaged in chaos.
Although a largely lethargic police fired teargas tear gas to disperse the Zanu PF mobs they failed to stop them from throwing stones and beating MDC-T activists. This forced the party to cancel the rally before Tsvangirai could deliver his address.
MDC-T Secretary General Tendai Biti said, “there are literally hundreds of people that have been beaten up, that have been stoned by ZANU-PF supporters. They have suffered bruises, tissue injuries, various degrees of injuries. They watched us as these ZANU-PF youths destroyed our property and assaulted our members,” he said.
“Unfortunately we are unable to do this rally because of incredible acts of wanton violence, malicious violence that we have suffered at the hands of ZANU-PF this morning. It is self-evident that ZANU-PF is already building up to the next election. It is quite clear that we are in a chaos scenario where they are unleashing violence,” Biti said. Nehanda Radio.com
