Deported Zimbabwean war vet sent back to UK

By a Staff Reporter

A 50 year old Zimbabwean war veteran deported to South Africa by UK immigration authorities on the 11th of August this year was swiftly returned back to the United Kingdom following legal intervention.

Nelson Ngwenya otherwise known as Charles Zibonele Matsholo was detained at Hamondsworth Detention Centre after the UK refused his asylum application on the basis that he arrived in Britain using a South African passport.

Like many Zimbabweans who had to use foreign passports to enter the UK Ngwenya was still able to produce copies of his Zimbabwean birth certificate, national I.D. card, and other numerous documents that proved his Zimbabwean nationality.

Not only did he undergo a language analysis at the behest of the UK Home Office Ngwenya says he was able to demonstrate perfect knowledge about Zimbabwe, its suburbs, schools, types of examinations written, notable landmarks, national parks and civic leaders.

He even told the asylum interviewer that he fought in Zimbabwe’s liberation war. Immigration authorities insisted rather strangely that he was still a South African by descent.

Immigration lawyer Dr Simba Mavaza from IEI Solicitors confirmed to Nehanda Radio.com that on the 12th of August this year his client Ngwenya was back at Heathrow Airport after the deportation was stopped. More on the story as it develops…….
