CAIRO: Egyptian giants Al-Ahly came from behind to advance to the third round of the African Champions League on Friday in beating Zimbabwe’s Gunners FC 2-0. The Egyptian side needed to win by two goals to advance without extra time or penalties. Two weeks ago in Harare, the Gunners scored a surprise victory over the 6-time African champions 1-0 in what made Friday’s match a tense affair.
But the Cairo-based giants were smooth throughout the match, despite some early jitters.
Egyptian international midfielder Mohamed Abou-Treika saw his 14th-minute penalty saved by Gunners goalkeeper Tafadzwa Dube. That was just about the only highlight for the Zimbabwe side in the match.
Shokri headed home seven minutes later, his first Champions League goal, and Samir converted from the spot on the stroke of halftime after Dube had fouled Emad Meteab.
Al-Ahly is looking to return to the top of African football with a 7th African championship, but if the second round was any indication, it could be an uphill battle. Bikya Masr
