Hubby murders wife in cold blood

By Tafadzwa Chiremba

A MUFAKOSE man allegedly battered his wife to death last Thursday night following a dispute over the feeding of their children, in a domestic violence case that has shocked the neighbourhood.

Oliver Mashava allegedly murdered his wife, Winnie Nyamayaro, a nurse at Harare Central Hospital, after accusing her of starving the couple’s children.

According to neighbours, Mashava attacked his wife at around 10pm but they could not intervene since the couple was inside their house.

Mashava has since been arrested and is assisting Marimba Police with investigations. Harare police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau confirmed the incident yesterday, saying Mashava appeared to have assaulted his wife using clenched fists and booted feet.

“It was a domestic dispute that resulted in the husband apparently assaulting the wife with clenched fists and booted feet.

“The wife was admitted to Harare Hospital where she subsequently passed on,” said Insp Sabau. Mashava is said to have gone to his home at Block 13, Mufakose Flats, where he found his two children from another relationship complaining of hunger.

A misunderstanding ensued, resulting in the man assaulting his wife severely. Upon realising that his wife was unconscious, Mashava sought the assistance of a neighbour only identified as Paul to carry his wife to Crowborough police base where he reported the case.

He later drove his wife to Harare Hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. About an hour later, the wife was transferred to the conventional wards where she subsequently died. Mashava was being held at Marimba Police Station yesterday where he appeared apprehensive as he paced around the holding cells.

Back at the flat, a sombre atmosphere engulfed the block as tenants tried to come to terms with the horrific attack. Mashava is expected to appear in court soon.
