As predicted by Nehanda Radio in our earlier report, the government has finally taken the bold step to withdraw the operating permit of all Mhunga buses in the country.
This follows a fourth bus accident involving the company in 2 years which claimed the lives of 40 people on Sunday. The Mhunga bus is said to have tried to overtake a vehicle in front of an oncoming lorry resulting in the collision.
Transport Minister Nicholas Goche announced the decision to cancel permits for Mhunga buses after visiting the scene of the accident.

“During my new term in the ministry of Transport it is sad to note Mhunga buses have claimed over 73 people in three months, it is against this background that my ministry has, after conducting extensive assessments on accidents involving Mhunga buses concluded to finally withdraw the operating permit.”
He further added that, “We are instituting an inquiry to find (out) whether the company workshops and buses meet the required standards,” Goche. The minister also blamed the driver of the bus on Sunday whom he accused of over-speeding. He has since been detained at Beatrice Police station assisting police with investigations.
Thirty-three people died on the spot while seven others died upon arrival or admission at various hospitals bringing the accident’s death toll to 40.
