MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai has made a passionate appeal to leaders of break-away formations, Welshman Ncube and Tendai Biti, who recently signed a unity pact, to rejoin the mainstream party to form a united front to confront the ruling Zanu PF.

Delivering his end of year message at Harvest House in Harare, Tsvangirai said there was need to put aside personal egos and come up with a real democratic force to dislodge Zanu PF and President Robert Mugabe

“The MDC believes in the unity of purpose …I see my colleagues organising themselves into a coalition, but what we can say here is that there is a big tent approach that all democratic forces must unite regardless of their political opinions and egos,” Tsvangirai said.

“The time to unite and mobilise the people of Zimbabwe has come for the end game is beckoning. I, for one, would be prepared to consider that very seriously and the sooner people realise the importance to unite and to form a united force the better.”

The MDC renewal team led by interim president Sekai Holland and MDC fronted by Ncube last month signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in which they pledged to work together to bring about ‘real democracy’ in the country.

Biti is behind the Holland-led MDC renewal team.

Ncube broke away from Tsvangirai’s MDC in October 2004 where he was secretary-general, while Holland and Biti walked out of the party at the beginning of the year after demanding that the former trade unionist step down as leader.

Ncube and Holland’s united force blasted Tsvangirai for being undemocratic and centralising power to fulfil his own political agendas. The Zimbabwe Mail
