The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) on Friday, 30 June released the full list of all candidates who were successfully nominated for the 23 August 2023 general elections in Zimbabwe.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa (Zanu PF) and opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa on Tuesday successfully filed nomination papers ahead of today’s sitting of the nomination courts across the country.
Ambassador at Large Uebert Angel’s lawyer Professor Lovemore Madhuku has dismissed Al Jazeera’s “Gold Mafia” documentary claiming that everything aired by the four episode expose was done under a classified operation by Zimbabwe’s intelligence system. This follows the release of four episodes of Al Jazeera’s documentary which implicated high ranking Zanu-PF officials as part of a clique notoriously known as “Gold Mafia” facilitating smuggling gold worth millions of dollars.
Moses Tofa: “This article is directed to Professor Lovemore Madhuku. There is no doubt that Prof Madhuku is one of those who fought a commendable fight in the struggle against authoritarian politics and in the dispensation of knowledge in Zimbabwe. He is one of our finest legal minds. However, he is now walking in the opposite direction, a direction that is viciously corroding both his legacy and his intellectual astuteness.”

In the last two months, Professor Lovemore Madhuku, the President of the National Constitutional Assembly, and law lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe has appeared on two Zimbabwean social media channels, the HSTV and another calling itself the Citizens Voice Network to discuss the achievements of the opaque political body that is the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD).
It is mostly political hot air! While commenting on the POLAD, Professor Lovemore Madhuku strayed into the current debate around the arrest and perpetual incarceration on remand of Citizens Coalition for Change Deputy Chairperson, Job Sikhala, his fellow CCC MP Godfrey Sithole and other CCC activists (The Nyatsime 13) who were arrested on 14 June this year.
This was in connection with the disappearance and then reported murder of CCC activist Moreblessing Ali in May this year. His comments have been rather incoherent, outright condescending to the intelligence of Zimbabweans, seemingly sycophantic and deliberately spiteful to the CCC leadership in a childish way for someone of his stature.
This is what makes one hold the opinion that the old geezer Robert Mugabe might have been right after all about the erratic behavior of Professor Lovemore Madhuku.
Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Vice President Tendai Biti has urged constitutional law Professor Lovemore Madhuku to apologise to law students he taught for his recent remarks where he claimed CCC leaders needed to negotiate with Zanu-PF in order to end the ‘unjust’ incarceration of opposition MPs Job Sikhala, Godfrey Sithole and 16 residents of Nyatsime.
CHIPINGE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa is more likely to relinquish power compared to former President Robert Mugabe if defeated in an election, NCA leader Professor Lovemore Madhuku has said.
Mines Minister Winston Chitando has failed to defend himself in a case he is accused of grabbing eight gold mining claims belonging to businessman Yakub Ibrahim Mahomed in Mberengwa.
“Teachers cannot be suspended from work by a Government Minister: they are employed by the PSC (Public Service Commission). Even the PSC itself has no power whatsoever to effect a blanket and mass suspension. The purported suspensions are unacceptable. Government must dialogue with teachers’ unions and address issues,” he tweeted.
The Constitutional Court has thrown away a High Court ruling declaring invalid the five year extension of Chief Justice Luke Malaba’s term of office by President Emmerson Mnangagwa beyond 70 years of age.
