The reaction to Hopewell Chin’ono’s arrest and subsequent detention has become a significant indictment of how Zimbabweans have become miserably complicit in their continued deprivation, humiliation and dehumanisation by the Zanu-PF government.
With each and every personal and legal setback that Chin’ono has suffered, Zimbabweans have responded with a disturbingly familiar retort: be strong, Hopewell.
Tafi Mhaka: "So, the MDC Alliance must embark on a nationwide mobilisation drive to gather comprehensive support for peaceful demonstrations and democratic reforms. It must be highly visible on the ground and lead the fight for change. Its leadership structures must criss-cross the country beating the drum of nonviolent struggle for democratic change."
Tafi Mhaka: "When it comes to systematic human rights abuses committed by delinquent member states like Zimbabwe, the African Union has a duty to do more than issue empty statements. It must take swift action, and where need be, institute strong disciplinary measures. If it does not, or cannot, what really is the African Union's current role in Africa?"

This week President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed former Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete and former Safety and Security Minister Sydney Mufamadi as special envoys to Zimbabwe.
Their reported brief is to help Zimbabwe resolve an allegedly unfolding human rights crisis. The move, while commendable, is just a public relations exercise and impulsive response to a deepening economic and political crisis that South Africa has long ignored.
