Former tourism minister Walter Mzembi urges Peter Ndlovu to lead ZIFA

Must Try

Self-exiled former tourism minister, Walter Mzembi, has thrown his weight behind Zimbabwean football legend Peter Ndlovu to lead the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).

Mzembi, believes that Ndlovu, currently holding an administration position at Mamelodi Sundowns, is the right man to take the reins at the country’s football mother body.

He emphasised that would Ndlovu lead, “it will be a well deserved cap to his (illustrious) football career”.

The ex-foreign affairs minister took to his X to express his desire for the Zimbabwe senior national team all time leading top scorer with 38 goals from 100 caps, to take over at ZIFA.

“Peter is football and football is Peter. Every person should be allowed and assisted to reach their point of self actualization,” wrote Mzembi.

“For Peter Ndlovu, landing the ZIFA Presidency is a well deserved cap to his football career.”

Nsukuzonke as Ndlovu is nicknamed, is a beloved figure in Zimbabwean football.

This follows the determination he had during his days in the national team set up as well as the contributions he made for the local football, and Zimbabwean football in general.

As a result, this has made him people’s choice to become the ZIFA president just like Samuel E’too in Cameroon.

However, despite the public support, the first African to play in the rebranded English top flight league, has remained quiet about vying for the ZIFA presidency or taking over in the near future.

Instead, the former Warriors captain has focused on mentoring and motivating the current generation of players.

Recently, he praised Khama Billiat for his decision to return to the national team fold saying it’s helping players like Walter Musona scorer of two goals when Zimbabwe beat Namibia 3-1 in a crucial AFCON qualifier.

The former Highlanders and Sheffield United forward also encouraged Knowledge Musona to come out retirement attributing that his experience could help the youngsters.

Musona retired from international duty in 2022 with 24 goals from 49 caps.

He is second to Ndlovu in terms of the highest number of goals scored by an individual in the Warriors team.
