Isidingo’s Papa G did not have medical aid… concern as tributes pour in for SA’s favourite gangster

Concern has been raised once again about the financial standing of South Africa’s most famous actors, after revelations that veteran African performer, Darlington Michaels struggled with his health in the later years of his life as he did not have medical aid.

The veteran actor is best known for his role as flamboyant gangster Georgie “Papa G” Zamdela in the SABC3 soapie Isidingo.

The news of his death was confirmed by the SABC on its social media pages over the weekend.

“The SABC is deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Darlington Michaels. His immense contribution to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered,” read the statement.

Former Co-star, Jack Devnarain, who starred as Rajesh Kumar alongside Papa G, in Isidingo, revealed that the actor had struggled in the last few years.

The 54-year-old screen star was admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital after he reportedly suffered a stroke.

“The last time I connected with Darlington was on a phone call during Covid. I knew that he was quite sickly. I knew that his health had deteriorated. He didn’t have a lot of support around him aside from close friends and family.

“He didn’t have medical aid; it was exceptionally difficult for him to get around and to continue working. He was very reliant on support, especially during Covid, and I was worried about him.”

Devnarain said Papa G had tried his best to hide his poor health over the years.

“He would always say he’s getting along and doing fine. So he was exceptionally brave and never gave a true picture of the state of his health.”

“He was very much a senior person to me, he was a veteran and I worried about him knowing his health.”

Meanwhile, the actor’s former Co-stars on Isidingo have paid tribute to him following his death.

“Papa G, I love you #RIPDarlingtonMichaels,” his on-screen daughter, Khabonina Qubeka, who played Nina Zamdela on Isidingo for a number of years posted.

“Papa G! I used to get into so much trouble doing scenes with Darlington in the ‘Shebeen’. He would make me laugh so much I couldn’t get through a scene. I’m talking non-stop belly laughs! He was such a kind, funny and gentle man. Rest in peace,” wrote Jay Anstey on Instagram.
