The ruling Zanu PF does not want another government of national unity, according to secretary for administration, Ignatius Chombo.

He said the political opposition was fomenting unrest through protests so as to push Zanu PF into another GNU.

“The opposition is doing this (protest) with the hope that they would force Zanu-PF into a Government of National Unity.

“There cannot be a Government of National Unity when Zanu-PF won the elections and was given a five-year mandate to rule,” Chombo told journalists.

President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF were forced into a coalition government in 2009 after a discredited presidential run-off in 2008 which the 92-year-old leader won after the initial winner, Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) withdrew from due to widespread violence.

The Government of National Unity (GNU) ended in mid-2013 to pave way for general elections that Zanu PF won with a contested landslide and the Mugabe establishment has since then been struggling with rising unemployment, a worsening economy and a legitimacy crisis.

Some think tanks are calling for a transitional authority to replace the current government while muffled calls have been made for the resumption of a coalition set up.

At its high level meeting on Wednesday, Zanu PF resolved that they would not get into another GNU, according to Chombo. Nehanda Radio
