Donald Trump says ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran are moving forward positively, but cautioned that a final agreement has not yet been completed.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump described the discussions as “constructive” and stressed that both countries needed time to finalise the details properly.

“The negotiations are proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner,” Trump wrote.

He added that Tehran “must understand” it cannot develop or obtain a nuclear weapon.

The remarks came amid growing speculation over a possible agreement following reports that Washington and Tehran have made significant progress during recent talks.

However, Trump later tempered expectations by clarifying that no final deal has yet been fully negotiated.

“It isn’t even fully negotiated yet,” he wrote in another post while defending the negotiations against critics within the Republican Party.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said substantial progress had been achieved, although he acknowledged there was still “work to do.”

Iranian officials meanwhile cautioned against assuming an agreement was imminent.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said recent convergence between the two countries did not automatically mean disputes over key issues had been resolved.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency later accused the US of obstructing aspects of the negotiations, warning that the agreement could still collapse.

One of the major issues under discussion reportedly involves the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said any final agreement must eliminate what he described as the Iranian nuclear threat.

Iran continues to maintain that its nuclear activities are intended solely for civilian purposes.

Reports emerging from US media outlets suggest negotiators are discussing proposals involving restrictions on uranium enrichment, possible disposal of enriched uranium stockpiles and phased sanctions relief.

Another major issue centres on the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.

Trump indicated that a future agreement could eventually lead to the full reopening of the waterway, although US officials confirmed blockades linked to the conflict would remain in place until a final agreement is signed.

The talks come after months of heightened regional tensions, including military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities earlier this year and ongoing conflict involving Israel, Iran and Iran-backed groups across the Middle East.

Political divisions are also emerging in Washington, with some Republicans expressing concern that the proposed agreement could allow Iran to retain too much leverage or economic relief.

Others within Congress have cautiously welcomed the diplomatic progress as a possible path away from further military escalation in the region.
