Themba Gorimbo has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts, bringing an emotional end to his fighting career after admitting he no longer sees a path toward achieving his dream of becoming a UFC champion.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Zimbabwean fighter thanked the Ultimate Fighting Championship, supporters, and everyone who had been part of his journey in combat sports.
“I dared to be someone and something and failed,” Gorimbo wrote.
The fighter said his ambition had always been to become a UFC champion and explained that he no longer wished to continue competing if he could not reach that goal.
“My dream was to be a UFC champion and if I cannot be that I am going to walk away from the sport,” he said.
Gorimbo acknowledged the emotional difficulty of the decision, saying he had given everything he could to the sport before deciding to step away.
The MMA athlete added that he may eventually return to the sport in a different capacity, potentially as a coach or manager, but said his immediate focus would now shift toward his family.
“Maybe I will make a comeback as a coach or manager someday but for now the focus will be my family,” he wrote.
Gorimbo’s announcement has triggered an outpouring of support online from fans who praised his resilience, determination, and inspirational rise from difficult beginnings to the world stage of mixed martial arts.
The Zimbabwean fighter became widely known not only for his performances inside the cage but also for his personal story of hardship, perseverance, and survival before reaching the UFC.
Throughout his career, Gorimbo frequently spoke about overcoming poverty and adversity while pursuing success in professional fighting.
His journey attracted international attention and support from major figures within the combat sports world, helping turn him into one of Zimbabwe’s most recognised athletes globally.
While stepping away from active competition, Gorimbo indicated he still hopes to remain connected to MMA in the future through mentorship and athlete development.
“I am officially retired from MMA as an athlete,” he concluded in the statement.
