US federal authorities have warned that Iran could potentially respond to American military action by launching drone attacks targeting the US West Coast, according to a security alert reviewed by ABC News.
The alert, circulated to California law enforcement agencies in late February, stated that intelligence suggested Iran had considered carrying out a surprise drone strike from a vessel positioned offshore.
Potential targets were described only as unspecified locations in California.
Officials noted that there is currently no further information about the timing, method, or individuals who might be involved in any such attack.
US authorities issued the warning as the Trump administration continued military strikes against Iran, while Tehran has reportedly responded with drone attacks across the Middle East.
The FBI’s Los Angeles office declined to comment on the alert, and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
US intelligence officials are also increasingly concerned about the growing use of drones by Mexican drug cartels.
A September 2025 security bulletin reviewed by ABC News indicated that cartel leaders may have considered using explosive-carrying drones to target US law enforcement or military personnel along the US-Mexico border.
Although such an attack inside the United States would be unprecedented, officials say the scenario remains possible.
California officials say they are coordinating security efforts. A spokesperson for Governor Gavin Newsom said the state’s Office of Emergency Services is working with local, state and federal agencies to protect communities.
Security analysts also warn that drone threats could potentially come from multiple directions.
Former Department of Homeland Security intelligence chief John Cohen said Iran has established connections in parts of Latin America and possesses the capability to deploy drones, making the warning important for law enforcement preparedness.
“We know Iran has an extensive presence in Mexico and South America, they have relationships, they have the drones and now they have the incentive to conduct attacks,” Cohen said.
“The FBI is smart for putting this warning out so that state and locals can be better able to prepare and respond to these types of threats. Information like this is critically important for law enforcement.”
Officials also note long-standing concerns that equipment or drones could be positioned in advance on vessels or other locations outside the United States in case of future conflict involving Iran.
