Tributes flood in after death of sungura music legend Nicholas Zakarai (68)

HARARE – Tributes have flooded in following the death of legendary sungura musician Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria at the age of 68.

Zakaria, one of the founding members of the iconic Khiama Boys, had been battling diabetes and hypertension.

The news was announced by his family on the Nicholas Zakaria and Khiama Boys Facebook page.

The statement read, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas Zakaria, the talented musician and beloved member of our community.

“Nicholas left an indelible mark on the music world with his inspiring voice and dedication to his craft. His legacy will live on through his music, and he will be deeply missed by fans and loved ones.”

Causes of his death have not been communicated.

Former Mt Pleasant MP Fadzayi Mahere took to X to pay tribute to the legendary musician.

“Very sad to learn of the news of the untimely passing of the Senior Lecturer, Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria, an iconic artiste and respected pioneer of Sungura music in Zimbabwe. What a sad loss to the nation. Most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.” she wrote.

Prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono wrote: “I am saddened to hear that Zimbabwean Sungura music giant Nicholas Zakaria, known as the Senior Lecturer, who led the Khiama Boys, has died.

“His passing marks the winding down of an era in which he shaped and defined Sungura music, an era whose only remaining notable giant is Alick Macheso, whom Nicholas Zakaria mentored and trained.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may his music live on in our hearts,” Chin’ono added.

Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Anselem Sanyatwe paid tribute saying; “It is with profound sadness that I learnt of the passing on of Madzibaba Nicholas Zachariah, this morning.

“Madzibaba Nicholas was a Sungura Legend, whose music enriched Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage. He left a void that makes our arts sector poorer. I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and fans. His legacy will live on. Rest In Peace, Nicholas Zachariah.”
