King Charles strips Prince Andrew of Royal titles and orders him to leave Windsor residence

LONDON —  King Charles III has taken the most decisive action yet against his younger brother, ordering the removal of all remaining royal titles and privileges from Prince Andrew and instructing him to vacate his long-time Windsor home.

Buckingham Palace confirmed on Friday that the Duke of York’s styles, titles and honours are being withdrawn. The statement said the move was “necessary to protect the integrity of the monarchy,” though it noted that Andrew “continues to deny all allegations made against him.”

Under the decision, Andrew will no longer be referred to as “His Royal Highness” or “Prince Andrew.”

Official documents and palace references will now use his family name, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. It is the first time in modern royal history that such sweeping measures have been imposed on a senior family member by a reigning monarch.

Royal Lodge Eviction

The King has also directed his brother to surrender his lease on Royal Lodge, a 30-room mansion on the Windsor Estate where Andrew has lived for over two decades.

Palace officials said he has been offered smaller private accommodation on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, a move expected to take place before the end of the year.

According to palace sources cited by The Guardian, the King views the change as part of a broader effort to streamline royal finances and remove any residual public support for non-working members of the family.

Context and Reaction

The decision follows years of controversy surrounding Andrew’s association with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Duke stepped back from public duties in 2019 after a widely criticised BBC interview in which he failed to express regret for his friendship with Epstein.

He later settled a U.S. civil lawsuit filed by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual assault — claims he continues to deny.

While the settlement ended the immediate legal threat, public and political pressure on the monarchy persisted. Senior royal aides have described today’s action as the final step in Andrew’s removal from public life.

Reports from People Magazine suggest that both Prince William and Queen Camilla support the King’s decision, seeing it as a necessary measure to preserve the institution’s credibility.

Future Implications

Stripping a royal of peerages or titles typically requires parliamentary action, and some of those formal steps may still follow. However, the palace’s announcement makes clear that Andrew will no longer appear in official contexts or represent the Crown in any capacity.

Campaign groups such as Republic, which advocates for a non-monarchical UK, have called for further scrutiny of Andrew’s finances and are reportedly considering a private prosecution over alleged misconduct.

The Duke’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, retain their titles and are not affected by today’s move.

“His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the style, titles and honours of Prince Andrew. These measures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding his continued denial of the allegations made against him.”
