ZIFA boss Nqobile Magwizi says “division will not take us forward” after poor results

HARARE – Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Nqobile Magwizi has called for unity in the game, warning that “division will not take us forward; unity, patience and collective effort will” amid rising attacks and criticism from sections of the media.

Magwizi, who was widely seen as the darling of the media and many football stakeholders during his election on January 25, is now facing growing criticism from some journalists and fans, just 10 months into his tenure.

Speaking at the Warriors’ squad announcement for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday, Magwizi urged all football stakeholders to put differences aside for the good of the sport.

“Division will not take us forward; unity, patience, and collective effort will. Zimbabwean football has risen before, and it will rise again. With unity, discipline and belief, we shall restore the pride of our game,” said Magwizi.

Addressing supporters directly, he added: “To our fans, we say: your passion is not taken for granted. We hear you. We respect you. We ask you to stand with us and with the Warriors.”

Magwizi also acknowledged the disappointment over recent results but pledged to act decisively.

“We meet today at a time when our football is under intense scrutiny. Recent results have not met the expectations of our nation, and we share in the pain and frustration of millions of Zimbabweans.

“Football in our country is more than a sport; it is a bond that unites us and a symbol of who we are. As ZIFA, we will not hide from this reality. We accept responsibility, and we are determined to act with honesty, courage, and purpose,” he added.

“Since assuming office, this Executive has worked to rebuild the foundations of our game, restoring confidence through stronger partnerships with COSAFA, CAF and FIFA, which have brought renewed governance, capacity-building and hosting rights.”

Magwizi’s first major test will be the upcoming AFCON tournament in December in Morocco.

Historically, ZIFA and the national team players have clashed over financial issues during the competition, with players threatening to boycott matches.

They (players) will be demanding their dues with the association struggling to meet obligations.

Already, negotiations for appearance fees ahead of AFCON are at a stalemate, with ZIFA offering US$2,500 per player while the squad is pushing for US$5,000.
