South African radio station Kaya FM has dismissed media personality Sol Phenduka from its roster, ending his stay at the broadcaster over controversial comments made about Minnie Dlamini’s private parts on MacG’s podcast.
Phenduka, a co-presenter on the station’s breakfast show, was terminated following an internal review into remarks he made about Dlamini.
His comments were widely criticised as misogynistic, sparking public backlash and prompting action by the station.
In a statement, the station’s acting managing executive Dave Tiltmann stated, “Kaya 959 cannot and will not condone comments made on the MacG Vodcast, where Sol Phenduka is an integral part of the presenting team.
“Misogynistic remarks made about actress Minnie Dlamini were unacceptable and inconsistent with respect owed to women.
“As a content provider of our flagship breakfast show, his alignment with comments made on the vodcast, does not reflect who we are as a station, nor what our listeners expect of us.”
The comments that have landed Phenduka in hot water were made in an episode of MacGyver ‘MacG’ Mukwevho’s Podcast and Chill series, where the pair speculated over actress and media personality Dlamini’s breakup with Dr Brian Monaisa and her previous relationships.
In that episode, MacG claimed that Dlamini could not sustain a relationship because of foul-smelling private parts.
These remarks prompted Minnie to release a statement and subsequently sue MacG and Sol for R2.5 million over the comments made over her personal life.
