“He knew too much” … how missing drugs consignment led to the murder of DJ Sumbody

SOUTH AFRICA – A drug consignment, which reportedly went missing in Kwazulu-Natal, led to a killing spree that claimed the lives of entertainers in Johannesburg, including DJ Sumbody.

The popular producer and club owner, whose real name was Oupa Sefoka, was gunned down with an AK-47 in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on 20 November 2022. His two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, were also killed.

Last week, police arrested four suspects, including businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe, with sources close to the investigation revealing the murder was ordered by a feared gang known as “The Big Five”.

According to Sunday World, a drug consignment that had gone missing in KZN resurfaced in Joburg, were it was now being sold at a cut price at local entertainment joints.

Sumbody reportedly became entangled in the saga after the individuals who possessed the stolen cargo approached him, asking for help in setting up a meeting with a businessman.

At the time, Sefoka was opening a Cape Town branch of his Ayepyep night club.

“His role was to get a Cape Town businessman to meet with these guys.

It was not clear at the time if he knew the business to be discussed involved drugs,” said an associate familiar with the events. In an unforeseen twist, the businessman then informed the “Big Five” that he had discovered the individuals who had stolen their illicit cargo.

Despite, pleas on his behalf by those who felt that he was an innocent party in the unfolding drama, Sumbody, was added to an extended hit list by the Big Five.

The DJ was reportedly added to the list because “he knew too much”.

Other showbiz figures who became casualties of the alleged drug feud include the late Sandile “DJ Citi Lyts” Mkhize, rapper Thulani “Heavy Pablo” Msimango and Hector “Ginimbi” Buthelezi, also known as DJ Vintos.

According to information from police insiders and associates close to DJ Sumbody, the origins of the crime date back to a drug consignment that allegedly disappeared in police custody in KwaZulu-Natal a few years ago.

On the night of his murder, the DJ had been warned to get out of Joburg, a city he planned on relocating from as he prepared for life in Cape Town. His murder, after a gig at the News Café, cut short his plans.
