BIRMINGHAM – A 34-year-old British man appeared in court on Monday (30 June) charged with murdering his Kenyan care worker Irene Mbugua in Birmingham.
Emergency services found the body of the 46-year-old mother of four at a house in Winson Green on 23 June 2025 and a post-mortem later confirmed she died as a result of serious head and face injuries.
David Walsh (34) was arrested a short time later and police confirmed that Irene had been working at the house as his carer.
Walsh was initially treated in hospital and later charged with murder and assaulting a number of police officers.
He appeared at Birmingham Magistrates on Monday and remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court later this week.
West Midlands Police, Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell said: “Our thoughts remain with Irene’s family and loved ones at this extremely difficult time.
“They are being supported by our specialist officers and we continue to keep them up to date with the latest developments.”
In a statement following her death, Irene’s family paid tribute to her: “It’s so sad that you got snatched from us in such a cruel manner. We are so lost without you and we pray for Grace to face each day mum, your beautiful smile and hearty laughter will be missed.
“Please just remind us on how to join the dots because we don’t have a map yet. Rest easy you remain in our hearts forever.”
