WINDHOEK – The Zimbabwe U-17 girls national team, the Young Mighty Warriors, secured a place in the semi-finals of the COSAFA girls’ championship after a resounding 12-2 victory over last year’s finalists Lesotho on Wednesday in Windhoek, Namibia.
Coached by FC Platinum Royals’ Lindiwe Ndlovu, the Young Warriors entered the match as underdogs.
This was after their 3-0 defeat to Botswana in their tournament opener on Sunday.
However, UK-based rising star Mya Munyanduki and Legends Academy product Winnie Mapuwa led the charge, each scoring four goals helping Zimbabwe record a historic win over Lesotho who needed a draw to advance.
Alicia Chinyoka added a brace, while Chiedza Khumalo also found the back of the net in a dominant team performance.
Munyanduki, who was part of Zimbabwe’s U-15 squad at the 2023 CAF Schools Championship, was named Player of the Match for her outstanding display.
Zimbabwe will now face arch-rivals Zambia in the first semi-final on Friday, with Mozambique and Malawi set to meet in the second semi-final later that day.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s U-20 girls’ hopes of qualifying for next year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup came to an end after a goalless draw against Rwanda at the Kigali Pele Stadium.
The result means Rwanda advances to the next round with a 2-1 aggregate win, following their victory in the first leg at the same venue on Sunday.
