JOHANNESBURG – Controversial South African businessman Edwin Sodi is a free man after his attempted murder case was struck off the roll at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Sodi was charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm (GBH), and pointing of a firearm following an incident in Bryanston in 2022.

The charges were laid by his estranged wife, Nthateng Lerata, who alleged that she and a male companion, Faizal Motlekar faced a life-threatening encounter at the couple’s Bryanston residence.

It was alleged that during the confrontation, Sodi allegedly attempted to shoot Lerata, but his gun jammed, and he allegedly used the gun to hit Motlekar on the head.

Sodi made an appearance at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and expressed that he was relieved that the time-consuming process was officially over after making more than 20 court appearances.

“It’s a relief. I am glad it’s over,” he said.

“For the past three years, I have been here maybe 22, 23 times, so you can imagine how costly it is and the time appearing over a matter that shouldn’t have been here in the first place. I’ve got other issues to focus on, businesses to run and serious matters to focus on,” he said.

Sodi dismissed the allegations as “nonsense” and said it was clear they were never going to see and said the court came to the “right conclusion”. He added that it was clear he did no wrong when the accused withdrew the case out of their own doing.
