GWERU – Two Chinese nationals, Wang Jun and Liu Haifeng, have been remanded in custody until February 7, 2025, by the Gweru Magistrates’ Court facing charges related to a violent confrontation with a Zimbabwean worker, Kholwani Dube, at Bijou Farm in Gweru.
According to allegations, Wang Jun intervened in a scuffle between farm manager Liu Haifeng and Dube on January 21, 2025, pressing Dube’s head to the ground and pointing a firearm at him.
Wang Jun is also accused of using explosives without a blasting license at Bijou Farm in 2024 and excavating and blasting the ground without a permit.

Liu Haifeng, on the other hand, is accused of firing three shots at Dube using a Canik 9*18 pistol. He also faces charges of unlawfully using explosives without a blasting license in 2024 and illegal gold prospecting at Bijou Farm without a permit.
“On the 21st of January 2025 at Bijou Farm, the accused person allegedly intervened in a scuffle between farm manager Liu Haifeng and the complainant, Kholwani Dube, pressing Dube’s head to the ground and pointing a firearm at him.
“In 2024, the accused person is alleged to have used explosives without a blasting licence at Bijou Farm and is also alleged to have excavated and blasted the ground at Bijou Farm without a Permit,” the National Prosecuting Authority said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
Chinese miners have long faced accusations of disregarding environmental laws in Zimbabwe, resulting in dust pollution and the potential contamination of water sources due to alleged cyanide leaching, which is affecting local communities.
Recently, the Zimbabwean government has been scrutinizing a Chinese mining company, Sino Africa Huijin Holdings, over concerns about its environmental and social impact.
According to a recent report by the Voice of America, the company’s gold prospecting operations in the Mutasa District of Manicaland have been accused of causing severe environmental destruction, including dust pollution, potential contamination of water sources, and damage to homes due to blasting activities.
Local residents have complained about the effects of the mining, including vibrations, noise, and ecological damage.
The government has temporarily shut down the mine twice, in October and November 2024, due to non-compliance with environmental and mining regulations.
The mine has since resumed operations, with the company committing to adhere to regulations and fulfil its corporate social responsibility obligations.
