Outrage and shock as troubled couple 2Baba and Annie Idibia head for divorce

NIGERIA – After a twelve-year relationship that produced everything from cheating scandals to reports of domestic violence, the marriage between Nigerian singer Innocent ‘2Baba’ Idibia and long-time wife, Annie Macaulay-Idibia appears to have come to an end.

One of Nigeria’s biggest celebrity couples, Annie and 2Baba got married in 2012 and had two daughters together. In the video of his most popular song, African Queen, Annie played his love interest and it is believed that their relationship blossomed from there.

In a post on Instagram, the African Queen singer said they had been separated for some time and he had taken steps toward a divorce.

“I and Annie Macaulay have been separated for a while now, and currently filed for divorce,” he said in the Instagram post.

Annie’s relationship with 2Baba has often been a sore point, as the public has consistently condemned 2Baba, as they believe that he groomed Annie, seeing that their relationship began when she was merely a teenager (15), while the singer was 24 years old.

The musician reportedly fathered at least six children outside of marriage.

The two renewed their vows on the first season of Netflix’s Young, Famous and African, in a ceremony featuring fellow cast members and family.

The vow renewal also saw 2Baba declare his undying love for Macauley-Idibia while reflecting on their journey over the last decade.

While 2Baba declared his undying love for his wife, in the same season, she spoke openly to Khanyi Mbau and Andile Ncube about her husband fathering children outside their marriage, adding that their first child together was actually the musician’s fifth despite Anne meeting him before the other women.

For this, 2Baba apologised publicly for his indiscretions, acknowledging the embarrassment his actions had caused.

“I’m sorry for all the embarrassment I’ve caused my wife, my kids, my mother and all our family and my management team,” he said.

“I’m not looking for no sympathy; I’m not trying to make myself look good. I simply just don’t want to be the one that always apologises. I’ve been a sh***y father, husband and baby daddy. I have no excuses.”

That apology would be promptly followed by news of a sixth child outside wedlock.

After announcing that he and Anne would be calling it quits, 2baba deleted the post, only to follow it up with a video confirming its authenticity.

“No-one hacked my account, I said what I said, I come in peace,” he said in the video.

The couple have also cut ties on social media, unfollowing each other on their respective platforms, backing the performer’s statement about their split.

2Baba has received heavy criticism for his actions in his native Nigeria, with media personality Toke Makinwa saying that his announcement was inconsiderate.

“Nobody is asking anybody to stay in a situation that’s not serving them any purpose anymore. By all means, leave if you just want, but why bring this online at this very moment?

“We know what’s going on behind closed doors. The world doesn’t know anything; it’s already been hectic with opinions flying around, and when I say we will fight for her, I’m not talking about the general public,” she wrote.
