LONDON – Friends, colleagues and well-wishers have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the funeral costs of renowned Zimbabwean journalist and broadcaster, Lewis Machipisa, who passed away at his home in Catford, Southeast London, on January 8, 2025.
Machipisa had a distinguished career in journalism, working with the BBC World Service, among other organisations. His colleagues say that Machipisa was widely respected for his exceptional storytelling skills and his ability to bring people together.
The campaign, organised by Chofamba Sithole, aims to raise at least £9 000 to give Machipisa a fitting sendoff, celebrating his life and legacy. During the time of writing, £1191 had already been raised.
“As we reflect on his life, we remember his infectious joy, his knack for bringing people together, and his tireless efforts to uplift others,” Chofamba stated in a statement accompanying the GoFundMe platform.
“Whether through his work at the BBC World Service, his contributions to the Zimbabwean diaspora, or his legendary ability to turn any gathering into a vibrant celebration with song, dance, and laughter, Lew embodied the spirit of Hunhu/Ubuntu—’I am because we are’.
“In keeping with our African culture, we believe that those who knew and loved Lew deserve the opportunity to honour him one last time.
“We’re appealing to Lew’s friends, colleagues, and well-wishers to respond generously to this campaign and help cover the cost of laying him to rest in his home city of London.
“Your contributions will help us give Lew the send-off he so richly deserves—a celebration of his remarkable life and the friendships he cherished.
“Every donation, no matter the size, will go toward ensuring this farewell reflects the warmth, generosity, and vibrancy that defined him.”
