In the latest blow in what has already been a messy divorce, Pearl Mbewe, the wife of legendary South African actor Sello Maake kaNcube, has claimed that the thespian exposed her to HIV after he tested positive for the virus while they were together.

In an interview with Sunday World Mbewe, who had pressed and withdrawn criminal charges against Maake kaNcube for, among others, exposing her to HIV and Aids, said they started having unprotected sex after he assured her that he was free of the virus.

In an interview with Sunday Times, the actor had claimed that he had contracted the virus while the two were trying for a child.

“Three months after breaking up with the father of my kid, I went to test because I did not want to find myself carrying a child of my ex or jumping into another relationship without knowing my HIV status.

“My pregnancy and HIV results came out negative. So when he told me that he too was negative, I naively believed him,” she said.

Mbewe said she had finally got to know his true status after a visit to a gynecologist. The gynecologist had suggested an HIV test would help find the true reason the couple was failing to conceive.

“When the results came back two or three days later, the gynaecologist phoned him and told him that he wanted to see him to discuss the results. He then asked the gynaecologist to tell him on the phone.

“The gynaecologist then broke the news to him and told him that his results came back positive. My husband then asked about my results, and the gynaecologist told him that he will share the results with me. By God’s grace my results were negative” she said.

Meanwhile, KaNcube has promised to take legal action against his soon-to-be ex-wife for disrupting what he termed the “family unit” with her latest allegations.

“Besides what is said about my family by a discredited, backwards and colonised media house whose intention is to destroy African families, I will stand by the African family unit.

“December being a family month, I want to encourage and support family units that they should not be discouraged and humiliated by those who are paid and motivated to destroy African family units.

“I am aware of the defamatory statements made about me and I am proceeding with legal action in this regard. This is to protect the African family unit,” he said.
