A widespread power outage left both Zimbabwe and Zambia in darkness on Sunday night, with the blackout occurring at roughly the same time in both countries.

According to reports, the power outage in Zambia occurred at 8:15 PM, while in Zimbabwe, the blackout happened at 8:25 PM.

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) issued a statement apologising for the inconvenience caused and explaining that a system disturbance had resulted in a national blackout.

The authority assured customers that engineers were working to restore power, and most areas had been reconnected by morning.

“Our National Control Center has advised that there has been a national blackout. Works are already in progress to sort the issue,” ZESA said in a statement.

Similarly, the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) also reported a national blackout, with efforts underway to resolve the issue.

“ZESCO Limited informs the nation that the country has experienced a power system disturbance today, 24 November 2024 at 20:15 hours leading to loss of power supply that has affected the whole country.

“The Corporation is working diligently to resolve the unplanned outage and power supply restoration is underway.

“ZESCO will keep the country updated on this unforeseen development.

“We regret the unplanned loss of supply and seek our customers’ support and patience,” ZESCO Limited acting General Manager Justin Loongo told Zambians.

The two countries are struggling with severe power generation shortfalls. Low water levels at the Kariba Dam, a major source of hydroelectric power for both countries, have forced ZESA and ZESCO to reduce power generation.

In Zimbabwe, the power shortages have resulted in prolonged power cuts, with some areas experiencing outages lasting up to 18 hours a day. The country’s aging thermal power stations have also been plagued by frequent breakdowns, exacerbating the power crisis.
