Nelson Chamisa, Zimbabwe’s former opposition Citizens Coalition for Change leader, has congratulated Donald Trump on his election as the 47th US President, praising America’s democratic process.
Trump secured a decisive victory over Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris, surpassing the 270 electoral college votes threshold.
In a statement on Thursday afternoon, Chamisa praised the US systems, citing the importance of free choice, patriotic discourse, and transparency in elections.
“Congratulations to the 47th President of America, Donald Trump and to the American people for showcasing the power of free choice and the vitality of democracy,” Chamisa said.
“Elections are about choice, a true battle of ideas that should inspire patriotic and civilized discourse. The efficient voting process remains commendable.
“The swift and orderly announcement of results is proof of transparency and accountability promoting the resilience of democratic systems.
“Democracy thrives when the will of the people is respected, and this election serves as a powerful reminder of the endurance of our shared democratic values.”
Chamisa said Zimbabwe was still struggling to attain democratic systems, which guarantee free and fair voting.
“In Zimbabwe, our fight continues for a future where every voice is heard, every vote counts, where leadership reflects the true and full will of the people, and where institutions stand firmly in support of the Constitution,” he said.
Zimbabwe has consistently faced criticism for its human rights record and electoral processes.
The country’s 2023 elections were marred by concerns over the alleged impartiality of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission and reports of violence and intimidation against opposition supporters.
The international community, including the European Union and the United States, expressed concerns that the elections fell short of regional and international standards.
Chamisa lost to the incumbent leader Emmerson Mnangagwa in the widely condemned presidential plebiscite. The opposition leader refused to acknowledge the election results citing massive rigging.
The US government placed sanctions on 11 individuals, including President Mnangagwa and his wife Auxillia, and three entities for their involvement in corruption or serious human rights abuse.
Meanwhile, Mnangagwa has since joined other world leaders and congratulated Trump.
“Congratulations to President Donald Trump on your election victory. We stand ready to work with President Trump and the American people to build a better, more prosperous, and more peaceful world,” Mnangagwa stated on his official social media handle.
