Demand for action on fishermen safety as tragedy strikes in Lake Chivero

Must Try

NORTON – A recent tragic incident that led to the death of two Norton fishermen on Lake Chivero has sparked concerns about the safety of fishermen on the waterbody.

Ralph and Clemence lost their lives in the accident, with Clemence’s body recovered after an extensive search.

In an interview with Nehanda Radio, Norton legislator Richard Tsvangirayi has emphasised the need for urgent action to prevent similar incidents. He attributed the fishermen’s risky behaviour to unemployment and poverty, stemming from Zimbabwe’s economic challenges.

“It is still unclear what measures are being taken to educate and ensure that fishermen adhere to safety protocols while fishing,” Tsvangirayi said.

“Unemployment and poverty caused by the state of our economy is the reason why people resort to fishing without proper safety education.

“This is a call to action for the government and authorities to work closely with local fishing communities to not only enforce these rules but also educate fishermen on why they are necessary.”

Tsvangirayi expressed concern over the lack of essential safety gear, such as life jackets and communication devices, for fishermen. He noted that financial constraints hinder efforts to provide these critical tools.

The legislator also criticised the current emergency response systems around Lake Chivero, describing them as basic and limited due to infrastructural, resource, and financial challenges.

“Given that the lake is used for recreational activities and fishing, accidents and environmental hazards occur,” Tsvangirayi said.

“It is unclear what precautions are in place to prevent similar incidents.”

Environmental agencies, such as the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA), and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have been involved in monitoring and managing the lake.

Tsvangirayi, however, stressed the need for more advanced monitoring of strong currents and underwater obstacles.

To address these concerns, Tsvangirayi pledged to advocate for initiatives promoting fishermen’s safety and well-being. He plans to push for budget allocations for safety training programs, including emergency preparedness, first aid, and water safety training.

Tsvangirai also proposed community awareness initiatives, involving local leaders and fishermen’s associations, to promote water safety and emergency procedures.

“As the elected representative of Norton, I am going to advocate for and support initiatives that promote the safety and well-being of fishermen.

“I am going to push for budget allocations for safety training programs in the fishing sector. This could include funding for emergency preparedness, first aid, and water safety training,” Tsvangirayi stated.

“I will use my platforms to raise awareness about the importance of safety training and mobilize fishermen to participate in programs. This will be done through awareness programs, social media and community meetings.”
