LONDON – UK based Zimbabwean producer Rodney “Rymez” Hwingwiri is in line for major honours, after he was nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards for his work on Venezuelan musician Danny Ocean’s hit song, Amor.
The Latin Grammy Awards are awards presented by the Latin Recording Academy to recognize outstanding achievements in the Latin music industry. The Latin Grammy recognises works recorded in Spanish or Portuguese from anywhere around the world.
The work should have been released in Ibero-America, which encompasses Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and the Latino population in Canada and the United States.
Amor, one of 12 tracks on Ocean’s third studio album, Reflexa saw Ocean achieve his first Billboard number-one hit, as the track surged up the charts.
In a post on Facebook, Rymez confirmed that he had indeed been nominated for the prestigious awards, whose winners will be announced on November 17.
“Got my first Grammy nomination yesterday,” he announced to his followers on Facebook.
Born in Kariba, Rymez developed a love of music nurtured by his parents’ extensive tastes ranging from UB40 to the late Dr Oliver Mtukudzi.
When he was 13, Rodney and his parents migrated to the United Kingdom. In the UK, he mostly turned to music as an escape from his daily routine, dictated by school work.
At school, his classmates gave him the moniker Rymez because he used to perform poems and raps in between lessons.
Rymez has collaborated with artists such as Wretch 32, Sean Paul, Fuse ODG, Wizkid, Skepta, JME, Kojo Funds, Future, Stefflon Don, Idris Elba, X Factor winner James Arthur, Krept & Konan, Cassper Nyovest, Amplify Dot, Tory Lanez, Fivio Foreign and more.
