A Russian assault on a military learning center in the heart of the Ukrainian capital of Poltava on Tuesday resulted in the death of at least 47 people and left over 206 injured, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed.
In a video message, the Ukrainian president mentioned that initial reports suggested the attack utilized two ballistic missiles.
“One of the buildings at the Poltava Military Institute of Communications suffered partial destruction, trapping many under debris. Fortunately, many were rescued,” Zelenskyy stated in a video shared on his Telegram account.
“All necessary support is being provided for the rescue efforts,” he continued. Reports indicate that the second building struck was a medical facility.
The attack sparked outrage across Ukrainian social media following unverified claims that it targeted a military gathering or roll call, with many criticizing the authorities for permitting the event despite the looming threat of Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy acknowledged responsibility towards Russia but emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Poltava’s mayor, Philip Pronin, mentioned that his office could not disclose further details about the attack due to security concerns.
“The enemy is exploiting every opportunity to inflict more suffering and confusion on the Ukrainian people. It’s crucial to rely on trustworthy sources,” he cautioned.
Maria Bezugla, a member of parliament known for her criticism of the military’s leadership, accused senior officials of putting soldiers at risk by allowing such gatherings.
“These incidents are becoming all too common. When will we see an end to this?” she questioned on Telegram.
