HARARE – Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Chairperson, Justice Priscilla Chigumba, had a narrow escape on Sunday when her vehicle was involved in a severe collision with a fuel tanker on the Harare-Chirundu highway.
She emerged unscathed from the accident, which occurred while she was returning to Harare from Chinhoyi.
According to a statement released by Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana on Monday, Justice Chigumba’s Toyota Land Cruiser was one of three vehicles struck by the haulage tanker.
“Yesterday, ZEC Chairperson, Justice Chigumba was involved in an accident on her way from Chinhoyi when a haulage tanker crashed into three vehicles, including hers. There were no fatalities from the accident, and Justice Chigumba was not injured,” Mangwana confirmed.
Photographs of the damaged Toyota Land Cruiser, which was left with a severely damaged front end, including a crushed bonnet, dislodged wheel, and shattered windows, circulated widely on social media.

Harare-Chirundu Highway is one of the worst roads in Zimbabwe. In March this year, Transport Minister Felix Mhona indicated that the government intended to spend over US$550 million rehabilitating the road.
Over the weekend Mhona revealed that the government blew S$1.7 billion for road rehabilitation projects in Harare, in preparation for the recently concluded Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit.
