South African Kwaito star Mapaputsi, real name Sandile Ngwenya, has denied that he is bedridden and seeking help, after recent media reports suggested that the musician was struggling with an unknown illness.
According to reports, Mapaputsi was now reportedly bed-ridden due to ill-health, with industry colleagues expressing concerns as they claimed they have been failing to reach him due to his parents’ preference to keep his sickness private.
Mapaputsi has been acknowledged as one of the most vocal and proactive artists when it comes to the health and well-being of other musicians, as the kwaito star has always been the first to hold hands in solidarity when another performer is suffering from ill health.
In an unforeseen twist of events this week, the musician reportedly posted a video on social media announcing that he was well. In the video, the musician asked promoters to book him for shows if they wished.
“Baphi laba, baphi laba…bathi ubani osembhedeni? (Where are they, where are they…they say I’m bedridden?) Angizwanga…mina ngise Durban mos, awufuna uku’booker book see you soon (Excuse me…I’m in Durban, if you want to book, book see you soon).
“I’m in Durban having a good time. Baphi laba banxamba amanga ngise Durban, indaba yabo okuthi family family umuntu ulele phansi I don’t know (Where are they, they are lying about me, I’m in Durban, their news about family saying I’m bedridden I don’t know)” he said.
A source who spoke to TshisaLIVE said the musician had recovered from his previously dire situation.
“uSandile has improved, he can walk and he can talk without feeling pain, he is in Durban for fresh air. I’m happy to see him in this condition as he is showing signs of being optimistic that he’ll be up and running again,” said a source.
Mapaputsi’s manager Busi Kunene also said that the musician was indeed on the road to recovery:
“We went to see him a few days ago, he is promising he is really getting better. I heard he is in Durban but I haven’t followed up as I’m busy with road to Nkalakatha event. But we are happy with his progress.”
