HWANGE – A Hwange man has been fined US$400 for strangling his wife for persistently demanding he buys their child an ice cream when he was broke.
In a post on X, the National Prosecution Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the Hwange Magistrates’ Court fined the 47-year-old man US$400 or alternatively three months in prison after convicting him for physical abuse.
The man had an additional three months imprisonment term wholly suspended for five years.
On June 29 around 10am, the complainant (44) asked her husband to buy ice cream for their daughter. The man claimed that he had no money.
The conversation escalated into an altercation that turned violent as the man charged at his wife and strangled her with his bare hands. He only released the complainant and fled when he heard their neighbours’ approaching.
The NPAZ encouraged members of the public to desist from violence and resolve their disputes amicably or seek third party mediation.
Meanwhile, a Chipinge man (35) will spend the next two years behind bars after the local court convicted him of having sexual intercourse with a minor.
Sometime last February, the man from Chief Musikavanhu area, met the complainant (13) at the local shops, proposed love to her and she agreed.
On June 25, the complainant’s uncle went away and left the complainant at home. The man took the complainant to his house where they had sexual intercourse twice overnight.
The complainant’s cousin discovered that she did not sleep at home and upon enquiry, the complainant revealed that she slept at the man’s house and that they had sexual intercourse.
A police report was made leading to the man’s arrest.
He was sentenced to 36 months imprisonment, of which 12 months were suspended for five years leaving him to serve an effective two years in jail. New Ziana
