MASVINGO – The Masvingo City Council is planning to renovate the city’s iconic Mucheke Stadium to meet international standards required by governing bodies FIFA and CAF.
The exciting development likely set to take place this year, was revealed by the Masvingo City Council’s Public Relations Officer, Ashleigh Jinjika.
She told the Standard newspaper: “Renovations of Mucheke Stadium are expected to take off this year if the funds are permitting.
“We are renovating the stadium to meet the required (international) standards by CAF and ZIFA for PSL matches.
Already, the council has toured Rufaro Stadium which is currently under renovations by the Harare City Council.
Jinjika revealed the tour was aimed at equipping the Masvingo Council with the required expertise on how best they can revamp Mucheke Stadium.
“We recently toured Rufaro Stadium in Harare, and had a knowledge sharing exercise (on renovating Mucheke Stadium) with the City of Harare.
“It was fruitful, because we managed to get an understanding as well as an insight of how they are doing it.”
She added: “At the moment we are still deliberating on proposed designs equipping them with the required expertise. It’s premature to talk about the costs at the moment.
“Once the design is approved then will be able to draw the budget. Our engineers are working tirelessly on the designs of the stadium. We hope soon will be done with the process.”
The 5 000 capacity Mucheke Stadium last hosted a Premier Soccer League match in 2011.
This was when now defunct Masvingo United used the venue as its home ground before being relegated.
Currently, the multi purpose sporting facility is the home to Eastern Region division one side FC Wangu Mazodze.
