Patrick Zhuwao, a former cabinet minister currently in exile, has been awarded a doctorate from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

His dissertation, titled “Harnessing Digital Transformation to Build Social-Ecological Systems Resilience into Institutional Arrangements of Agricultural Transformation,” focused on leveraging digital solutions to enhance agricultural systems.

Colleagues who are also former cabinet ministers, including Jonathan Moyo and Saviour Kasukuwere, also in exile, congratulated Zhuwao on his achievement.

Moyo praised Zhuwao, stating, “Well done, my brother and Cde, Patrick, for being awarded a PhD… This is truly a milestone.”

Kasukuwere added, “Congratulations, Dr. Patrick Zhuwao. Well done, Dr. PZ, for this achievement.”

Investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono also extended his congratulations, noting that Zhuwao’s achievement serves as an inspiration to those who have faced difficult times and were forced to leave their country.

Chin’ono expressed hope that Zhuwao’s accomplishment would motivate others to pursue their academic goals, contributing to the development of their country upon their return.

“Congratulations, Patrick Zhuwao on achieving this academic feat that many of us dream of and hope to attain one day. You are an example to many who have faced difficult times, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

“I hope that all political actors from both Zanu-PF and the opposition who were forced to leave the country will see your achievement as something they too can accomplish, so that when the time comes to return home, as it always does, they come back intellectually better than when they left, and can contribute meaningfully towards the development of their country.

“It shows that no matter how far away you might be from home, you can still work towards a better future, both for yourself and your country.

“Congratulations once more! This also goes out to your loyal wife for being there to support you while you were busy with your studies,” he said.

Zhuwao, Moyo and Kasukuwere, along with others who were opposed to Mnangagwa’s succession plan in November 2017, fled the country during a military coup that ousted late former President Robert Mugabe.

It is believed that Mugabe negotiated for their safe exit before being forced to resign by the military.
