The Zimbabwe senior national team coach Jairos Tapera has identified 19-year-old forward Tawanda Chirewa as a potential star for the Warriors, calling him a “gem” after his impressive performance against South Africa on Tuesday evening.
The match was played at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
Tapera who was disappointed by the 3-1 defeat to arch rivals Bafana Bafana, praised Chirewa after the match.
Asked to give his assessment on the rising star who made his second international cap on the day, Tapera said: “He (Tawanda Chirewa) is excellent, he is a clever young boy. I think we have a gem in Zimbabwe.”

Tapera’s praise comes after the former Ipswich Town player was also on top of his form when the Warriors suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat to Lesotho last week Friday at the Orlando Stadium.
It is Chirewa’s skills, off the ball runs as well as his determination that has led Tapera and many to believe that he could be the next star for the Warriors.
His performances in the just ended 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have won him the admiration of fans including the Bafana Bafana faithfuls.
Chirewa’s journey began at Ipswich Town before he signed with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ under-21 team in September 2023.
“Wolves under-21s have bolstered their midfield ranks with the signing of Tawanda Chirewa. The 19-year-old joins from Ipswich Town,” the English Premier League (EPL) club wrote.
Following his stellar performances, the talented forward was quickly elevated to Wolves senior team where he made his full derby against Arsenal in April.
Chirewa signed his first professional contract with Ipswich Town in November 2020.
