The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the draw date for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that will be hosted in Morocco in 2025.
In a statement released on Thursday, CAF confirmed that the draw for the qualifying stages of the prestigious tournament will be held on 4 July 2024.
“The race towards the CAF TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025 will be officially launched on Thursday July 4, 2024 with the draw for the qualifiers for the said competition, in Johannesburg, South Africa,” confirmed CAF.
The venue for the event will be the SuperSport Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The format of the qualifiers will see the 48 teams divided into twelve groups, each containing four teams.
“48 nations, including the four winners of the preliminary round (Chad, Eswatini, Liberia and South Sudan), will be divided into 12 groups of four teams.
“Reigning African champion, Ivory Coast, tops the list of nations confirmed for this draw, as do Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini and Ethiopia.
“Others include Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe,” further wrote CAF.
The qualifying matches are scheduled to kick off in September 2024.
The Warriors are back in contention after missing out on the last edition due to a FIFA suspension.
