Mnangagwa’s reckless statement to Putin positions Zimbabwe as a security threat!

Must Try

Trending

The southern African region has, by and large, been regarded as a peaceful place.

Save for a few conflict zones – such as Mozambique, Angola, and the DRC – we have avoided stoking the flames of war.

This is particularly so as it pertains to inter-nation conflict.

Of course, countries such as Rwanda and Burundi (although not southern African states) have repeatedly been fingered in sponsoring cross-border wars in SADC member DRC.

Our region has been known for maintaining peace and stability by any means necessary – even if that meant states turning a blind eye to gross injustices perpetrated in their neighbors against their populations.

This has been done as an unenviable and ill-conceived way of avoiding the raising of tensions between states since the offending country may likely not take too kindly to being called out by its neighbors.

As a matter of fact, Zimbabwe is one of those countries that has benefited immensely from this ‘see no evil, hear no evil, and say no evil’ policy of SADC.

That is why, in spite of a damning election observer report by SADC itself on the August 2023 harmonized elections, the regional body refrained from taking any stern action or even issuing a strong message of condemnation.

The heads of state preferred to pretend as if all was well in Zimbabwe.

As it turns out, the country is even taking over the SADC chair in August this year!

It then came as a huge shock watching a video of Zimbabwe President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa moaning to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, over what he perceived as Zambia’s close alliance with the US.

This was during his (Mnangagwa’s) visit to the eastern European nation for the St. Petersburg Economic Forum.

In his remarks – which I am sure have sent shockwaves not only across the region but the entire African continent (if not the world) – Mnangagwa appeared to be begging for military support for Putin to ostensibly counter ‘Zimbabwe’s loneliness’ in the region.

In his pitiful display, he seemed to paint a picture of a Zimbabwe under possible threat from the US using Zambia as a launching pad.

How outrageous can one get?

Surely, on what ridiculous basis would Mnangagwa assume or even conclude that the US would want to attack Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe, of all countries!!

Really, Mr. Mnangagwa! Really!

I am quite certain that US President Joe Biden – or even Donald Trump, should he win the November 2024 presidential elections – is not at all thinking about Zimbabwe at the moment, let alone preparing a military attack.

The fact that the US recently removed most sanctions against targeted individuals and entities in Zimbabwe proves that it has lost all interest in the southern African state.

It would not surprise me at all if Biden or Trump did not even know the existence of a man called Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.

Granted, the US, on April 26, 2022, established its military Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Zambia.

However, it should be noted that this is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a military base.

AFRICOM in Zambia is merely an office set up in the US Embassy in Lusaka to assist the Zambian forces in the United Nations Multidimensional Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

As can he clearly determined this is neither a military base nor Zimbabwe the target.

Similarly, Zambia itself has never indicated a desire to engage with Zimbabwe in any military hostilities.

Indeed, under incumbent president Hakainde Hichilema, Zambia has sought to hold the Mnangagwa regime to account for its gross human rights abuses and violation of basic democratic tenets.

He pushed for the unactioned SADC election observer report to be taken seriously, on the basis that Zimbabwe had been indicted for violating regional principles and guidelines governing democratic elections during the August 2023 harmonized elections.

Nonetheless, there were never signs of any desire on Zambia’s part to wage war or take any other action against Zimbabwe.

This then poses a crucial question.

Why did Mnangagwa say what he said to Putin?

For what reason did he make it appear as though Zimbabwe was under threat from the US using Zambia?

Does he now hate Hichilema so much that he will do anything to ‘punish’ him for his bold stance – including launching a military attack against Zambia?

We may never know as this is a question only Mnangagwa himself will have to answer.

Nevertheless, for those of us in Zimbabwe, this stunt pulled by Mnangagwa in Russia is quite dangerous and makes us all uneasy.

We are a peace-loving nation that is averse to conflict of any type.

That is the main reason we have not even risen up against the Mnangagwa regime, regardless of its relentless onslaught upon the innocent people of Zimbabwe whose rights are trampled on each and every day.

We have watched as those in power looted our national resources without any remorse, whilst millions are driven into abject poverty.

They have arrested and jailed voices of dissent on spurious charges while at the same time ruthlessly clamping down on the opposition and flagrantly rigging elections.

Yet we have hardly lifted a hand against the kleptomaniac oppressive regime.

Here we have, though, our head of state seemingly pleading with the Russians to offer military assistance to the regime in apparent readiness with a war with Zambia.

How reckless can a leader get?

Mnangagwa’s statement has potentially positioned Zimbabwe as a regional security threat.

This may demand the immediate intervention of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defense, and Security – which is, interestingly, currently chaired by Zambia.

In fact, this may also require an extraordinary summit of the SADC heads of state to discuss this possible danger to the region.

We do not need and want war!

Let whatever Mnangagwa is planning or had on his mind when he met Putin be nipped in the bud.

Patrick Jnr Katseve people do not see that the American government has been fighting the Zim government for some time now, they want the current regime out of power because they are not benefiting economically. If you chose not to agree with the west terms they are bound to punish you and isolate you…look at botswana, they are busy mining diamonds and they have even built an army base there…The Day botswana says no to this agreement that’s the day their pula will become useless.

Why always negative…the president is giving a narrative of how Americans are playing their role in our neighboring countries and isolating zimbabwe…He is definitely right, that is what is there,he did not mention military support only but also financial and economic support. If he chooses to go to Russia for assistance in building our economy, it’s not bad…look at nations like China, India, they are working out economic deals with the Russians nit to mention BRICS countries…If he had gone to america and said these things you would be clapping hands because it’s America..If Americans are sidelining Zimbabwe what should the government do,fold hands and witness the country crumble…

David Palmer to say I’m a fool is unacceptable…can’t you debate your opinions without insults…this is the same mentality that has destroyed Zim…people who cannot make constructive criticism…so what’s the difference between you and zanu if you can’t tolerate someone views on social media…if we put you in power with such mentality, you will do much worse…you even mention respect…really…do you know what it means

Tumi Deon which support does the government want from America, despite the continous US aid agencies in the country?

Reply to  Anonymous

Mandiona Mabhoo Americans are not willing to work with the current Zim government,it’s not about aid only but business partnerships that build thr economy. They have imposed economic sanctions which makes any business activity with American investors impossible. They say they are targeted sanctions on individuals but the fact is that they affect the whole zimbabwean economic activity…

Tumi Deon Americans are different from the Chinese and Russians in the sense that Americans when investing in a certain country they see if that country respects human rights,if that country follows the rule of law,and many other democratic aspects, while Russia and the Chinese invest anywhere as long as there is no civil war in that nation,so Zimbabwe cannot be accomodated in American investments because of obvious reasons

David Palmer Africa is a battle ground for resources hence you find Americans ,Russians, Chinese and all other global power houses scrambling for the influence in Africa…The Americans are in the DRC where there are civil unrest, worse human right violations,DRC has even worse democratic aspects than Zim and contested election results all the time…But still the Americans are there silently amassing millions from the mineral resources…Then you tell me America cannot invest where there is no civil war…unrests ,democratic aspects??go and read the history of DRC and see who supported one of their dictators into power ,mobutu..you will see that your beliefs about America are distorted…

Reply to  Anonymous

Tumi Deon Then if the Americans are amassing wealthy from Africa to make their economy better,it’s good, than African governments who pocket all proceeds from the minerals while their nations are suffering. Most African countries are not poor but poorly governed by corrupt thieves masquerading as governments

David Palmer for zimbabwe to get independence, they got much support from Russians..they got special forces trained in Russia, military assistance in terms of weapons and financial aid…the same Russians you look down upon played a important role to release zimbabwe from the oppressive regime and the Americans were not involved…so what makes you think Americans have genuine interest in working with zimbabwe progressively as a sovereign state…if they do not respect the sovereignty of zimbabwe then any terms they may put on the table do not matter…

Reply to  Anonymous

Tumi Deon first of all the independence of Zimbabwe was negotiated , secondly America does not need Zimbabwe but vice versa Thirdly if the Americans are so bad why is it that anytime Zimbabwe is invited to attend international summities ,say in America or Europe they boost about it to the extent that they can spend a month making the story a headline on their news channels.

David Palmer negotiations were a result of the war, after Smith realized that victory for the black majority was imminent after being pushed hard by the war he opted for negotiations,it was an escape route,he was heading for defeat…America doesn’t need zimbabwe…thats not true…every business minded person would never turn a blind eye to profitable opportunities…America is all over Africa sticking its nose ,disturbing the sovereignty of independent states…That mentality that America doesn’t need a partner is very untrue…why would they keep on stressing about zimbabwean situation..

Reply to  Anonymous

Tumi Deon so you call that independence, ooh my foot,it was just a change of colour, now the black skin is now oppressing its own . Imagine if there was no donation like USAID and many other organizations funded by the Americans, many people would have died of hunger and diseases,so as long as African governments including Zimbabwe fail to run their economies and still accept donations from the Americans, they will still have every right to pork their noses in those nations including Zimbabwe.

Reply to  Anonymous

David Palmer you can discredit our independence as you like but we are far much better from the oppression regime..Yes we have our challenges as zimbabwe just as those European countries which went through some great economic challenges ,go study their history ,they went through even tough economic challenges that are much worse than zimbabwe…We have been independent for 42 years and we are still improving…Rome was never built in one day and Zimbabweans have the right to determine as a people what they would like to become without foreign interferences…Western and Europeans should respect the sovereignty of other states…You can laugh and say whatever you want about Zimbabwe but all I can tell you is the nation is build by resilient people and it shall prevail…I’m not an American and I will never be,I’m proud of being African and if I have problems in my country…I look forward that one day we shall overcome…you can Mock us and say whatever you like but we shall overcome…every sunrise n sunset we are building our nation as a people as determined as we were to overcome the colonial forces so shall we be as a people in developing a state that caters for its people…
