Dinson Iron and Steel accountant steals US$80K from co-workers’ salaries

MVUMA – A 33-year-old accountant, Nigel Nhamo, employed by Dinson Iron and Steel Company in Manhize, Mvuma, is facing theft charges after allegedly stealing approximately US$80,000 from his co-workers’ salaries.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) alleges that between July 2023 and April 2024, Nhamo tampered with the payroll and time sheets provided by the Human Resources Department.

“The State alleges that between July 2023 and April 2024, the accused person who is the company accountant altered the payroll and timesheets consolidated by the Human Resources Department by deducting various amounts of money from different individual employee accounts.

“He would forward the payroll with alterations to the bank and then instruct the bank to transfer the variances collected from individual employees to his personal bank accounts,” the state noted.

“The total amount stolen is USD80 000.”

These allegations come amidst reports of Nhamo and his wife celebrating a lavish wedding in December 2023, followed by a honeymoon in South Africa that included expensive activities like rock climbing on Table Mountain.

The US$1,5 billion Dinson Iron and Steel Company steel plant in Manhize near Mvuma is set to be one of the biggest steel producers in Africa. It is scheduled for commissioning sometime this year.

The project is expected to produce 600 000 tonnes of steel products in the first phase, rising to 1,2 million tonnes in the second phase, then 3,2 million tonnes in the third phase and ultimately five million tonnes per year in the final phase.

The first production of pig iron is expected to commence by the end of the first quarter before they move to the production of steel billets in the second quarter.
