HARARE – Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has said it will appoint the Chevrons substantive coach next month (May) as the search for the national team coach continues.
This was revealed by the ZC Managing Director, Givemore Makoni who told Zimpapers Sport by July they would have appointed a permanent coach.
“We are now going through the process of short-listing (candidates suitable for the post) and then we’ll put a panel together that will do the interviews for the head coach in the next week or so and it will obviously take some time.
“We will obviously look at appointing the coach maybe in the second week of May or maybe in the third week.
“I am sure that we will have a head coach before the India tour, which is scheduled for July,” Makoni revealed.
Makoni who also highlighted that “we are taking our time to do the selection process to get the right candidate”, added that in the meantime, the former Chevrons batsman Stuart Matsikenyeri will be appointed on an interim basis.
Matsikenyeri will be in charge of the Chevrons in the upcoming Bangladesh tour this month.
“So for the Bangladesh tour (end of April), we are covered. We have Stuart (Matsikenyeri) as an interim heading the coaching department,” he added.
ZC’s hunt for new a substantive Chevrons coach began in March.
“Zimbabwe Cricket is looking to recruit the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Team Head Coach,” ZC announced in a statement .
“The individual should have attained a recognised coaching certificate at a higher level and possess an impeccable record of coaching at first-class and international levels.”
The Chevrons are currently coachless following the departure of veteran coach Dave Houghton who stepped down in December 2023.
Houghton’s departure came after the Chevrons failed to qualify for the 2023 International Cricket Council Men’s Cricket World Cup and T20 World Cup.
In January, he was replaced by Walter Chawaguta who came in as an interim head coach for the Sri Lanka tour.
However, the post is now vacant after Chawaguta’s recent appointment as the Lady Chevrons’ new head coach.
