Robbery suspect shot dead after threatening detectives with a gun

HARARE – In a dramatic turn of events, Blessing Sumbani Sithole (49), a suspect wanted in connection with the February robbery of Quest Financial Services in Belgravia, was shot dead by police detectives.

The incident follows a weeks-long manhunt after a significant heist that saw US$720,676, ZAR10,500, €120, a CZ Vzor pistol, and three laptops stolen from the microfinance bank.

According to a statement released by Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, detectives received a tip on Sithole’s whereabouts on April 4th, 2024.

“Acting on information that Blessing Sumbani Sithole was hiding at a house in Makondo Extension, Chiredzi, detectives tracked the suspect and apprehended him,” said Nyathi.

The arrest led to the recovery of a separate firearm, a .38 Special Revolver with ammunition, and a vehicle Sithole claimed to have purchased with his share of the stolen money.

“The big break came when the suspect offered to lead detectives to the location of the CZ Vzor pistol used in the original robbery,” Nyathi continued. However, the situation escalated upon reaching the designated spot along Manyame River, Southlea Park.

“Sithole retrieved the pistol from a shrub, cocked it, and aimed it at the detectives escorting him,” revealed Nyathi.

Fearing for their lives, one detective was forced to open fire, fatally wounding Sithole. Though rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital, the suspect succumbed to his injuries.

The incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers while apprehending armed suspects.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that it subscribes to human rights but will respond appropriately to robbery scenes based on the prevailing situation,” emphasised the statement.

The police are urging the public to continue providing information on criminal activities, which proved instrumental in apprehending Sithole. The public can contact the National Complaints Desk or their nearest police station.

While the recovery of the stolen pistol offers some closure, the investigation into the original robbery continues.
