Zimbabwe is launching a pilot solar project aimed at reducing crippling power outages in the country.

The project, called the Presidential Solar Scheme, will see solar panels installed on rooftops in Harare’s Glen View suburb.

The Zimbabwe Solar Energy Company (ZISEC), a subsidiary of Prevail Group International (PGI), is leading the initiative with backing from President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the government, and the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).

Residents who participate in the scheme will benefit from standard contracts that ensure a return on investment.

Landlords who allow solar panel installation will receive a rental fee and be exempt from load-shedding, the practice of intentionally turning off power in certain areas.

The project is expected to create local employment opportunities as residents are trained to install the solar panels.

This project is seen as a potential solution to the country’s long standing electricity woes. Years of inadequate investment in electricity generation and a growing population have resulted in power shortages that are only worsened by drought conditions.

According to PGI chairperson, Paul Tungwarara, if successful, the pilot project will be expanded to other parts of the country with the ultimate goal of eradicating load-shedding nationwide.

“This project is a Presidential Solar Scheme that is going to be done under ZISEC which is going to be involved together with Prevail Group.

“We are going to generate solar from the rooftops and put the electricity into the grid and eradicate load shedding in the specific areas where we are installing the solar system,” he said.

Speaking at the launch, Zanu PF deputy secretary for security Tendai Chirau praised the project for being “in line with his thrust to leave no one and no place behind.”
