Munetsi blasts referee: Such ‘officiating’ tarnishes our image as a continent

Must Try

Zimbabwe Warriors midfielder Marshall Munetsi who was the team’s stand in captain in the absence of Marvelous Nakamba, has criticized the referee’s decisions in their 3-1 defeat to Kenya in the Four Nations tournament final yesterday in Malawi.

Munetsi believes some of the referee’s decisions were ‘unfair’ and could “tarnish the image of African football”.

His sentiments come after two red cards were issued to Teenage Hadebe and coach Norman Mapeza.

On the other side, Kenya also finished the match with 10-men after a red card.

Hadebe was sent for an early shower in the 57th minute after receiving a second yellow card while Mapeza was sent to the stands for dissent.

Reacting to the red cards, the Stade Reims midfielder said:

“We could have done better, we have things to learn. Unfortunately there were incidents that happened in the field of play with the referees.”

Munetsi called for improvement in officiating, stating: “Such incidents tarnish our image as a continent, we need to change and move forward,” the 26-year-old added.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder believes ‘poor officiating’ significantly impacted the Warriors’ performance.

Despite taking an early lead through a Kenyan own goal, the Warriors failed to hold on to the lead.

They conceded three goals that saw the Harambee Stars being crowned champions of the Four Nations tournament after coming from behind.
