BULAWAYO – Former Gwanda mayor, Rido Mpofu is headed to prison after losing an appeal at the High Court against both conviction and sentence for rape.
He was convicted of repeatedly raping his 15-year old niece between 2019 and 2020, and sentenced to 15 years in jail.
Mpofu appealed against both conviction and sentence, but the High Court in Bulawayo upheld the judgment, citing overwhelming evidence against him.
Evidence led in court showed Mpofu repeatedly raped the girl and bought her silence over the crime by threatening to stop paying her school fees and ejecting her from his home.
However, the girl revealed her ordeal to her grandmother, leading to Mpofu’s arrest.
In the judgment, three years of the sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour. New Ziana
